La ciudad posee 1.696.128 habitantes (2007), una disminución significativa respecto de los casi 2,1 millones con que contaba a mediados de los años 1980, que representan un quinto de la población total de Hungría. Es la novena ciudad en tamaño de la Unión Europea. El área metropolitana de Budapest cuenta con una población de 2,38 millones de habitantes.
La ciudad de Budapest es el resultado de la unificación en 1873, ocupando ambos lados del río Danubio, de las ciudades de Buda y Óbuda, en la orilla derecha, con Pest, en la orilla izquierda.
El clima de Budapest es templado, con veranos calurosos e inviernos fríos y cortos.

Budapest is the capital city of Hungary. As the largest city of Hungary it serves as the country's principal political, cultural, commercial, industrial and transportation center. In 2007 Budapest had 1,696,128 inhabitants with an official agglomeration of 2,451,418 , down from a mid-1980s peak of 2.1 million. The city covers an area of 525 km² (202.7 sq mi) within city limits. Budapest became a single city occupying both banks of the river Danube (Hungarians call it the Duna river) with the amalgamation on 17 November 1873 of right-bank (west) Buda and Óbuda (Old Buda) together with Pest on the left (east) bank.

Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Budapest is considered an important Central European hub for business, culture and tourism.
